A visit from friends

I’m so lucky to say that my friends came all the way to Stockholm to see me. They had already visited us last year and done quite a lot of touristy things so this time we had plenty of time for Fika.

Fika is a Swedish concept and is very important – spending time together over coffee and cake. Fika is a concept, a state of mind, an attitude and an important part of Swedish culture. Many Swedes consider that it is almost essential to make time for fika every day. It means making time for friends and colleagues to share a cup of coffee (or tea) and a little something to eat. We went for a walk in the woods to try and see deer, but we didn’t have much luck! Nevermind, we found a wonderful cafe to have some cake and a drink in.

We also went to the Eritrean restaurant in the Rådhuset Tunnelbana station (metro) and it was amazing. I had to take them there as I really enjoyed my last visit and the food is like nothing I’ve ever had before. The Injera is kind of like a mix between a pancake and a crumpet. You eat with your hands and its good fun!

We went on electric scooters to Gamla Stan and it was SO FUN!! I would totally recommend it as a great way to see Stockholm if you find walking hard going. In Gamla Stan we went for a glass of Glögg at Michelangelo and had some delicious chips, mozzarella balls and olives.

“Glögg is a spiced, sugared and simmered (or ‘mulled’) red wine. In Sweden this is a beverage consumed almost exclusively during the Christmas season, usually with raisins and blanched almonds added. Glögg is preferably served in a special little mug with a handle.”

It has been so nice to just spend the time together talking about random things, eating and having fun. They came with no plans other than to see us, so it’s definitely taken the pressure off that comes with people coming so far to visit you. I find it really hard to entertain people and it makes me really nervous so I’m glad they seem to be having a good time.

I’m trying to convince them they should stay, I mean it is lovely here right?
